AQHA -- AQHA RACING NEWS
January 2, 2008 – Lucky Seven Ranch's Blues Girl Too dominated the 2007 Los Alamitos year-end awards as voted by media members and track officials. Blues Girl Too was unanimously named Los Alamitos Horse of the Meet, 3-year-old of the meet and 3-year-old filly of the meet. Her 440-yard track record setting victory in the $1 million Champion of Champions was chosen as race of the meet. The filly by Corona Cartel broke Dash For Cash's 31-year-old track record at 440 yards in that race.
In addition to winning the Champion of Champions, Blues Girl Too also won the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap against older mares and the Grade 1 Golden State Derby. She ran fourth in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby. In 2006, Blues Girl Too was named 2-year-old of the meet and 2-year-old filly of the meet. There were a total of 17 votes for each category.
Strawkins, who won the Bank of America Challenge Championship (G1), received 10 of 17 votes for aged horse of the meet. The Hawkinson gelding received all 17 votes in this category. Volcom, the Los Alamitos Winter Championship winner, also received every vote on the ballot for aged stallion of the meet. Strength In Numbers, winner of the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship, was named the meet's top aged mare by a margin of eight votes to six over John Deere Distaff Championship and Las Damas Handicap winner Blazin Fire. Five Bar Molly, who beat the opposite sex in the Vessels Maturity, received the other three votes in the aged mare category.
FDD Dynasty and Little Bit Of Baja were the meet's top 3-year-old colt and top 3-year-old gelding, respectively. First Down Dash sired both horses.
FDD Dynasty won the Go Man Go Handicap against older foes and the Governor's Cup Derby, while Little Bit Of Baja won the Super Derby and also finished second in the Champion of Champions.
The tightest voting on the ballot was the 2-year-old horse of the meet with Golden State Million Futurity winner Eye For Corona receiving one more vote than Ed Burke Million Futurity winner Carters Cartel. Eye For Corona received every vote for 2-year-old filly of the meet, while Carters Cartel received 14 votes in the 2-year-old colt category. Magic Show Czech, winner of the Governor's Cup Futurity, received 14 of the 17 votes for top 2-year-old gelding.
Snowbound Superstar needed only two starts, both of which resulted in victories, to win the distance horse of the meet honor. The son of Snowbound was named on every ballot. This is the second straight year that he has earned that honor. The award for claimers was split into two categories this year: high claimer of the meet and low claimer of the meet. In addition claimers were limited to one stakes race appearance in order to remain eligible for this category. Fsixteen, who won eight of 10 starts, was named the high claimer of the meet, while Hez My Runner, a five-time winner, earned the low claimer of the meet honor.
Voting media members included representatives of the PCQHRA, Stallionesearch.com; Orange County Register; TVG; Equibase; Track Magazine, AQHA, and selected track officials. |
